The school championship, for the second year in a row, went to Bryn Wilcox, a sixth-grader, daughter of Drs. Kevin Wilcox and Lyric Santiago. Bryn secured her win by correctly identifying Chile as the country that shares the islands of Tierra del Fuego, inhabited by the indigenous nomadic Yaghan people, with Argentina.
She will take a 75-item written test to qualify for the State Geographic Bee to be held in Honolulu on April 5, where she will have a chance at advancing to the national championship round in Washington, D.C., on May 20-21.
“Congratulations to Bryn and all the SJS students who participated in the earlier rounds of the bee. This annual competition is open to students in grades 4-8, and practice sessions will begin again in the fall,” said SJS spokesman Bill Loewenstein.
Also finishing in the top three places were fifth-graders Alexandra Kim-Lee, second; and Bobby Castillo, third place.
